Hiking
During these years he played an active part in social life in Ilmenau. So was co-founder of the Thuringian Forest Club Ilmenau in 1880, the forerunner of the Thuringian Forest Association together with Eisenach and Gotha. He was chairman of the Ilmenau branch.
He was also the chairman of the Ilmenau municipal council and was a member of the municipal bathing committee.
This square was donated in his honor in 1905.
