The Dreiborn plateau is part of the Rurtal Mountains, which are part of the Northern Eifel. The landscape was formed during the Devonian period (around 400 million years ago), when a shallow sea basin existed here. Over millions of years, layers of sand and clay were deposited there, which became sandstone and slate under pressure.

During the last ice ages, the plateau was not glaciated, but the gentle hills and valleys were formed by frost weathering and erosion.
