If you don't want to climb along the railway line to the Gornergrat, you can take this alternative path. Compared to the climb along the railway line, it is a fairly steep path and in some places narrow and exposed. Please only with appropriate footwear and experience.

The wonderful view of the Grenzgletscher, Gornergletscher and the new Monte Rosa Hut and the rocks of the Gornergrat are really worth seeing.

The 400 meters of elevation in one go are tough, however, and usually have a gradient of 30-35%. About halfway up there is a climbing section about 5m high, but it is quite easy to manage.

At the beginning of October there was already about 15 cm of snow here and a descent without crampons would no longer have been advisable in my opinion.

Great, did this with two kids (8 and 10). Exciting descent, the little one sometimes needed a helping/securing hand. One very short easy climbing passage, otherwise surefootedness required but no dangerous exposure.

Steep and narrow, but only a few slightly exposed spots. The (absolutely amazing) view of the glacier 500m below can be a bit overwhelming if you're afraid of heights though and once you're in, you're pretty much committed.

Also, don't go down if you actually need walking sticks to move safely. It's an easy hike on sure footing but nightmare fuel if not.
