The Staelduinse forest is the only remaining natural forest in the Westland. It originated after 1850 on a sand ridge that the Maas laid down over the centuries and later blew up into a dune. Beech avenues have been planted in the forest, which beautifully accentuate the hilly areas. The name Staelduinen is said to be derived from the steel pins with which fishermen secured their nets in the Maas at high tide. At low tide, the fish that swam along with the river current got stuck in them. The western part of the area consists of dune grasslands, meadows and hayfields. The forest is home to many mushrooms and stinze plants. You will also find various bats here at dusk, which search for food from the bunkers in the area. More information in the visitor's Christmas centre d'Oude Koestal.
