The Institute for Optics and Quantum Electronics works on the field of the interaction of extremely intense laser radiation with matter in a wide range with working groups of 5 professorships (2 of which are jointly appointed with the Helmholtz Institute Jena), as well as a junior professorship.
The bandwidth ranges from phase-stabilized single cycle pulses to the Petawatt power class and from photoelectron spectroscopy to X-ray spectroscopy and polarimetry.
The institute has unique technological expertise in several of these areas.
In addition, the institute is heavily involved in teaching and serves beginners' lectures for major and minor students as well as lectures for higher semesters including master’s courses.
A broad spectrum of topics in optics is covered, ranging from the fundamentals of optics to non-linear optics and X-ray physics to relativistic optics.
The institute is networked in many ways. On site, it is involved in the inter-faculty Center for Medical Optics and Photonics (ZeMOP) and the Abbe Center of Photonics. There is also a very close network with the Helmholtz Institute Jena.
At the European level, the participations in LaserLab Europe and in the major projects ELI and HiPER should be mentioned.
