The tower of the Bernardine Church dominates the panorama of the town situated on a hill. Near the monastery, on the flattened top of a hill, there is a large market square. Four streets run off its corners; the steep Zawiła Street is particularly picturesque. The large, rectangular market square was once the city's main market square and the center of life for its inhabitants. In the 1950s, trees were planted on it and paths were marked out. Currently, it has the character of an intimate city park. In the past, the entire square was surrounded by wooden houses with arcades supported by carved pillars. One of the few surviving wooden houses is located in the western frontage of the market square at no. 34. It is an arcaded house from 1791. A small brick house with a decorative frieze attached to it on the right housed the first post office in Alwernia (1867). The neighboring, wooden house with a porch (no. 33) was built at the beginning of the 20th century. On the northern side of the market square there are brick, one-story houses from the 19th and 20th centuries, rebuilt and renovated. One of them houses the Local Government House of Culture. At the end of the northern frontage, a large brick house has been preserved, facing the market square with its gable wall. It is a former inn, built in the mid-19th century. Right next to it there is a small house with a picturesque, glass veranda and ornate wooden details. The arcaded house, which was located on the eastern side of the market square, can be seen in the ethnographic park in nearby Lipowiec. In the eastern part of the square, among the trees, a brick chapel from 1860 has been preserved. The southern frontage is quite closely filled with one-story brick and wooden houses and multi-storey houses built before the mid-20th century, in the south-west corner.
