At the end of the 19th century, the number of escape attempts increased. To discourage the escapees and to reassure the local residents, work started on digging a ring ditch around Merksplas-Kolonie. In the south of the Colony, however, it was never completed. The ring ditch around Merksplas-Kolonie is 6.5 km long. It has a walking path on both dikes. The canal used to be an open canal, but today you will find a wooded strip here.
