The bridge was built from 1879-1882. Striking are the four figures that symbolize shipping, trade, industry and agriculture. The piers adorn the coats of arms of the cities, Magdeburg, Hamburg, Brandenburg (Havel) as well as the city Altona, the other side those of the cities Leipzig, Dresden, Prague and Berlin.
