"Was" because it is a river without/with hardly any water. Certainly the Benedendurme is virtually dry.
Durmen comes from the Celtic word "Dormia" which means 'Stormy River
In bygone times, the Durmen could flow heavily after it had rained heavily.
Now the Durme consists of 8 different parts that more or less correspond to the historical course. The river starts as Poekebeek, Oude Kale, Nieuwe Kale. Canal Gent-Terneuzen, Moervaart, Zuilede and finally follow the course under the name Boven-Dijle and Benedendurme.
