The beginnings of Bischofsheim are associated with the founding of a monastery in the 8th century on the road between Fulda and Salz (near Bad Neustadt an der Saale). For centuries the place was part of the territory of the Bishopric of Würzburg. After its dissolution and the reorganization after the Napoleonic era, the Würzburg area became part of Bavaria in 1814.
