Industrial stone mining in the region of today's Geopark began with the construction of Germany's first long-distance railway line from Leipzig to Dresden (construction period 1835 to 1839). Until around 1850, stone extraction was dominated by human power. The era of industrial stone mining began in 1890. The quarry on the south side of the Löbenberg was in operation from 1892 to 1902, and the western quarry from 1927 to 1958. Today, the remaining pits are filled with water.Pyroxene-poor to pyroxene-free quartz porphyry is exposed in the Löbenberg quarries. Due to its high compressive strength, the "Hohburg Quartz Porphyry" is suitable for bank reinforcements, as substructure material and paving stones, as well as for specialty products in the raw materials and ceramics industries.
