The Alteburg Roman fort and two of its predecessors once stood here near Idstein-Heftrich. Unfortunately, nothing of it can be seen above ground, but the camps could be proven with aerial photographs and geomagnetic measurements. Notice boards along the way indicate this. The wide view of the Feldberg must have had a similar effect on the Roman soldiers as it did on us today.

Cycling

There used to be an auxiliary fort near this point, not where the trees were planted. This was removed over time and the traces were largely destroyed by agriculture. Part of the structure became visible again through ground radar measurements. It also became apparent that the Limes was relocated here again over time.

The Alteburg Roman fort was once a Roman numerus fort that belonged to the western Taunus section of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Today, the site lies as an archaeological monument beneath a field about 1.5 kilometers south of the Heftrich district of Idstein in the Rheingau-Taunus district of Hesse.
