Huis Janssens shines again like never before. The facade and interior of the stately building have regained all their original, grandiose colours.
The house dates from 1878–1880 and was designed by architect Pieter Van Kerkhove. It was built on behalf of poet, art lover, industrialist, municipal councillor and member of parliament Alfons Janssens.
Huis Janssens is located in Zamanstraat, which – shortly before Alfons Janssens bought his building plot from Mr De Jaeghere-Cardo in 1876 – was constructed as a connection between Regentiestraat and Ankerstraat. The house, visible from the prestigious Stationsstraat (via Dr. Verdurmenstraat), was originally detached with a landscaped garden behind it. The museum site was later expanded from there. In 1971, the city bought the adjacent textile site Peeters, Van Haute and Duyver, where SteM is now located. We also know architect Pieter Van Kerkhove as the designer of, among other things, the current neo-Gothic town hall of Sint-Niklaas (1876–1878) and the Bank van Waes (1881), the later library of the Davidsfonds (now funeral director Van Dael Sereni, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwstraat 32).

The former residence Alfons Janssens is a mansion in neo-Flemish Renaissance style dating from 1878-1880, built to a design by architect Pieter Van Kerkhove and commissioned by Alfons Janssens. In 1909 the house was purchased by the city and since 1911 it has been furnished as a museum. The probably late 19th-century garden fence was placed here in 1933-1934 and comes from the Boechout castle in Meise. The 18th-century pump in the garden is the only preserved city pump. This was originally on the Houtbriel and was placed here in 1924.

The castle (Zamanstraat 49 and 49D) houses two of the three branches of the Stedelijk Museum (SteM): the Mercator Museum and Curiosum.
In addition to the Mercator collection dating back to the 16th century, the Mercator Museum also has a ‘Modern cartography’ department.
Curiosum is - as the name suggests - a collection of curiosities.
In a plan to reorganise the Sint-Niklaas museums under the name "MAP" (Museums at the Park), the Mercator Museum will move to the right wing of the SteM Zwijgershoek this year (2025). This space, where the permanent collection used to be, has a surface area that is twice as large as the old Mercator Museum. This gives the opportunity to show the collection to the public in a new and unique way.
