Barr was first mentioned in documents in the year 788 as Barru, but the settlement of the region has been archaeologically proven since the Bronze Age. First, Barr was a Reichsdorf, but was pledged on June 6, 1409 by King Ruprecht to the Palatinate, along with Heiligenstein, Gertweiler, Goxweiler, Oberburgheim and Niederburgheim. In 1472, the resulting reign Barr finally reached the Palatinate and was sold in 1568 to the free imperial city of Strasbourg and shared their fate. Particularly worth seeing is the Town Hall Square with the town hall, which was built in 1640 on behalf of the city of Strasbourg on the foundations of a medieval castle, the Wepfermannsburg.
