There are indications that as early as the late 13th century - just a few years after Friedberg was founded - a church with the name of St. Jakob can be assumed. But more than existence is unknown. The fact is, however, that this old church was badly damaged in the turmoil of the Thirty Years War in 1632, and that work on the renovation was only started hesitantly - only the restoration of the dilapidated choir was not completed until 1713, a whole 81 years later. While these repairs were still being made, the Friedberg city councilors turned to Elector Max Emanuel in 1700 and asked him to raise the church tower. The reason given is that the citizens “… the gleith (bells) cannot be heard during the service.” 75,000 bricks were required as the material, which raised the tower to a height of 232 feet (approx. 75 m).
