With the construction of the Kiel Canal from 1887 to 1895, the Wilsterau was cut off from its natural headwaters, which lay west of the canal near Burg (Dithmarschen). It begins today east of the canal, to which it is connected via a pumping station, and runs from there in a south-easterly direction, makes an arc in a southerly direction, and then reaches Rumfleth and Wilster. The Wilsterau originally ran through Wilster in a loop, but it was shortened with a puncture. Near Kasenort it flows into the Stör at river kilometer 63.5. Today's course is about 19 kilometers long.
