The Nete Canal connects the Albert Canal near Viersel with the navigable part of the Nete, downstream of Lier near Duffel, which flows into the Rupel a little further on, the waterway to the Scheldt. Through the canal, ships from the south or west can reach the Albert Canal without having to sail past Antwerp.
The section between the Rupel and Duffel was already navigable in 1839. The section to Viersel along Lier did not follow until 1952.

Several marinas can be found along the Nete Canal, including several in Duffel, Lier and Emblem. There are also several water sports clubs located on the Netekanaal.

Since 1955, the Nete Canal has been the most important supply route from the Albert Canal for the drinking water supply of Antwerp by the Antwerp Water Works.
