The Valvasone Castle is the central nucleus of the village of the same name which is now one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy" and also known as Borgo delle Spose. Built in the twelfth century on late ancient pre-existing structures, the castle belonged to the ancient and noble family of the Valvasone, whose name, which in old German means "farm of the wolf", is represented in the coat of arms. Damaged and renovated several times, today it looks like a Renaissance palace. Over the centuries it has hosted several important personalities such as Pope Gregory XII in 1409, Pope Pius VI in 1782 and Napoleon Bonaparte in March 1797. Thanks to recent restorations, it is possible to admire a precious eighteenth-century theater surrounded by a splendid older frieze, dating back to end of the 16th century. In another room, frescoes from the second half of the 14th century have been brought to light, depicting a rare secular cycle.

Valvasone Castle is the heart of the village, which once hosted two popes and even Napoleon during his conquest of Friuli. It was built in the 13th century as a defensive structure and today resembles more of a palace. The castle can be visited on certain weekdays. It houses one of the smallest historic theaters in Italy, with only around 50 seats.
