Lake Sellin borders the seaside resort of Sellin to the west and, together with the towns of Altensien and Moritzdorf on its western shore, which are also part of Sellin, is a popular excursion destination. The lake is a shallow water lake and has only a small amount of saline water. Tributaries such as the Mönchgraben and others ensure a constant water level.

Lake Sellin is ideal for rowing boat trips, which can be rented on site. The surrounding moraine hills with the Granitz forests are tempting for hiking. Moritzdorf, an idyllic, small holiday resort with all thatched, well-kept houses, is part of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve and is completely car-free. The “Moritzburg” is well known and quite popular, a restaurant with a viewing tower located above the village, which was opened in 1901 and is still in operation today.

A small ferry between Moritzburg and the Baabe harbor saves you an hour-long walk. This ferry runs on what is probably the shortest ferry route in Germany. The distance is 49 meters, and the ferryman uses a rowing boat, powered by nothing but pure muscle power. It is primarily tourists who treat themselves to this experience.

The maximum 5 m deep and about 200 ha large lake is located southwest of Sellin. The lake is connected to the Rügischer Bodden via the Baaber Bek. Its water is not very salty and in summer the lake is a popular swimming destination. A water hiking rest area was recently opened on its north bank. There you can also find the Roland smoker with its fish dishes that are well worth recommending.
