At the top of the fountain stands the city patron Peter, who gave the fountain its name.
The four cardinal virtues, namely Justitia - justice, with sword and scales, Fortitudo - the strength, with a broken column, Temperantia - the moderation, with wine and water, and Sapientia - the wisdom, with mirror and Snake.

Unfortunately it is not that easy to look at the fountain in peace. Either it is a market and it is 'built up' by stalls or the tourists crowd around it.

The Petrusbrunnen in the southern area of the square, created in 1594/95 by the sculptor Hans Ruprecht Hoffmann, stands roughly at the intersection of Grabenstrasse and Dietrichstrasse. At the top there is a figure of the city patron Peter, who gave the fountain his name. The four cardinal virtues are grouped over a hexagonal basin, namely Justitia - justice, with sword and scales, Fortitudo - strength, with a broken column, Temperantia - moderation, with wine and water, and Sapientia - wisdom, with mirror and Snake. In between there are figures of virtue, putti, animals (geese, lions, dolphins, eagles, monkeys), the city arms and various decorative elements. The coat of arms of the Diocese of Trier (a red cross on silver) is also included, with the coat of arms of Bishop Johann VII von Schönenberg on it in the middle (three silver crosses on black). In addition to its decorative function, the fountain originally served as a water supply and was fed by the water pipe from the so-called Herrenbrünnchen. It has only been a purely ornamental fountain since the installation of a central water supply in Trier.

The Petrusbrunnen stands directly on the main market, the center of the city. The top is decorated by the patron saint Peter, hence the name used to be the market fountain.

One should look closely. Behind the actual characters there are funny monkeys that do all kinds of "bad" things. Anyone who reads the story or takes a guided tour has a lot to laugh about and be amazed at. Well preserved and definitely worth a try.

At this point / I would like to quickly / say something about the source
(even if it corresponds to the art of poetry / if this 'source' is a 'well'):
To quote the incomparable humorist Heinz Erhardt (1909 - 1979), who was known to a wide audience for his word jokes and "Noch'n poem", with a short quatrain:
"There is certainly much beauty in
    on the element, the wet.
Because you can drink the water.
But you can - also leave it."
    (H.Erhardt)

On top of the fountain column, St. Peter stands as the city's patron with his two keys and watches the goings-on all around. The fountain has been restored several times (most recently in 2013), the color scheme in the style of the 18th century was restored in 1983.
