In 1916, Don Fernando commissioned Soto Aguilar to cast a bronze and cast iron monument, 2.5 meters high, to be mounted on a revolving platform in order to place it at the top of the mountain. This monument was blessed by the Bishop of Malaga on January 12, 1921. In 1936, during the Civil War, it was ripped from its pedestal and thrown into the gorge, where it broke into pieces. In 1940, after the end of the civil war, a large wooden cross was erected in the same place. This was destroyed by a lightning strike in the 1960s and replaced by another. In December 1994 the monument site was renovated and prepared for a new monument by the sculptor Don Miguel Fuente Del Olmo, erected and inaugurated with a pilgrimage on February 28, 1995. Since then, this event has been celebrated every February 28th.
