At 140 km2, the Saaler Bodden is the largest of four parts of the southern Bodden chain, which stretches as a contiguous water area with a total of 197 km2 between the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula and the mainland. In the northeast, between the islands of Bock and Werder, the Bodden chain has a direct connection to the Baltic Sea.
Ribnitz-Damgarten is located in the southeast of the Saaler Bodden, on Lake Ribnitz. Here the 72 km long Recknitz River flows into Lake Ribnitz near Damgarten and forms the geographical border between Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania.

The southern part of the Bodden, to which the town of Ribnitz-Damgarten borders, is called Ribnitzer See. In the east of the Ribnitzer See the Recknitz river flows into the Saaler Bodden. There are also the two eponymous districts of Ribnitz-Damgarten, the only town on the Saaler Bodden: Ribnitz west of the river and Damgarten east of it.
