In GDR times Chemnitz was called Karl-Marx-Stadt. The city was a regular stage of the International Peace Race. Located on the edge of the Ore Mountains, the mountains are virtually on the doorstep. 1952 led the eighth stage from Leipzig to Chemnitz. On the 212 kilometers, some tough climbs awaited the pros, who at the end of the Belgian Raymond van Hoven best stuck away and was the first to enter the Ernst Thälmann Stadium (today Sportforum Chemnitz).

Road cycling

The cycling track is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. The track, built in 1909, was renovated in the mid-2010s and has been in use again since 2018. The track is open and only closed from 10:30 p.m. until early in the morning, so you can experience the feeling of cycling on the track and do a few laps.
