In 1930, the newly built ship bridge of the Free Turnerschaft Water Sports in the district of Kiel-Wik was named after him in memory of the Kiel union leader Gustav Garbe. As early as 1933, the naming was reversed by the National Socialists and the gymnastics association was dissolved.
On the anniversary of the sailors' uprising on November 3, 2016, the bridge got its old name back to honor Gustav Garbe's role in Kiel trade union life and the sailors' uprising of 1918.
