    The castle was first mentioned before 1370 as a hammer castle. After its destruction in 1504 in the Landshut War of Succession, it was rebuilt in 1523. After being destroyed again in 1552 during the Second Margrave War, it was rebuilt around 1569. During World War II it burned down in 1943 and was rebuilt again in 1955.
