Although the Sfakiots keep saying that the area was never ruled by Turks, there is a κουλές (kulés), i.e. an Ottoman castle, in every strategically important place (Askifu, Chora Sfakion, Lutro, Agia Rumeli, etc.) was built in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Unfortunately, these historically and architecturally interesting buildings are completely left to decay.
