It looked just as peaceful as in our aerial photo on March 26, 1979 in Katzwang, a district of Nuremberg, before the dam of the new Main-Danube Canal, which had been flooded as a test, broke and triggered a catastrophe. 80 million liters of water poured over the place, leaving one dead, several injured and the equivalent of 10 million euros in property damage. As a result, all safety standards were revised, and the waterway has been spared comparable accidents to this day.
