A victim of climate change - Due to its location, the medium-sized Steingletscher is one of the better-known ice streams in the Swiss Alps. Its once shapely and easily accessible glacier tongue, with textbook glacial end lake, has defied climate change longer than most. In recent years, however, the end of the glacier has literally collapsed and retreated over several rock steps into impassable terrain. The former glacier tongue has almost completely melted away.

The lake, cloudy from glacial milk, was only created in the 1950s when the Steingletscher retreated. Around 1995 the glacier tongue lost contact with water.
