Top cycling routes to Stirniai Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist

Tips

  • Already in 1726 there were two chapels in Stirniai: one of the Jesuit St. John. There were two priests from St. John's Church, which was visited by the Molėtai pastor twice a year: on St. John's Day. He was also a member of the Molite Order twice, once on St. Casimir's Day and the other time on St. Casimir's Day. He was also a member of the parish on two separate occasions, once on the day of Saint Casimir and once on the day of the Apostle Bartholomew. After the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1795, the church was apparently no longer used for services. The pastor from Molėtai visited her on the feast of St. Mary Magdalene and St. Catherine. The Jesuits of Stirniai had been active in the area since the late 17th century. They owned possessions (the villages of Mockėnai and Vikėnai - both today in the commune of Suginci), lakes mostly recorded by the Žarovskis. The Jesuits of Stirniai used to baptize and get married in the chapel of Suginci. The Jesuit Fathers of Delamarsa, Jonas Balandis, who worked in the Molėtai region at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century are well known. The rebuilt chapel at Stirniai (apparently a Jesuit chapel) survived into the 20th century. When the congregation was founded in 1922, services were held in the chapel. In 1931 a temporary wooden church was built in another place. In the years 1937-1940 the pastors Jonas Kazlauskas and Jonas Daugėla (1909-1941) together with the parishioners built the current church of stone masonry. Father J. Daugėla was shot by the retreating Red Army on June 29, 1941 (Translated from Wikipedia).
