Schattenburg Castle

The historic Schattenburg
The Schattenburg towers over the city and was the seat of the Counts of Montfort until the end of the 14th century. The keep, the highest part of the Schattenburg, is a viewing platform and allows a view over the whole of Feldkirch. It is particularly interesting for castle enthusiasts, as the complex has been preserved almost unchanged despite some extensions. Here you will also find the Schattenburg Museum and an inn, which invites you to linger and is famous for its giant schnitzel.

A first construction phase has been proven since about 1230/65. The castle was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Montfort until 1390. Important extensions and a general transformation took place at the beginning of the 15th century under Count Friedrich von Toggenburg (1416-1436) and under the bailiff Hans von Königsegg around 1500. Later additions date from the 17th century Century. Until 1773 the castle was Vogteisitz and until 1811 prison, since 1825 it is owned by the city of Feldkirch. It served as barracks and urban poorhouse in the 19th century. Today, the local museum and an inn are housed here.Source: Information board

The Schattenburg built in the 13th century served the guests of
Montfort-Feldkirch as a residential and administrative center. After the Montforters died out in 1390, the Habsburg bailiffs resided here. In 1825 the town of Feldkirch acquired the castle.
