In 1884, the city granted permission to build a commercial building with a massive stable, from which the Riemeister inn emerged just one year later near the southeast shore of the lake, which still existed at the time. The inn was intended to close the supply gap in excursion traffic between the Fischerhütte on Schlachtensee and Paulsborn on Grunewaldsee. The thatched wooden hall with a coffee garden soon inspired the Berlin vernacular to call it Uncle Tom's Cabin, which then caught on.
