The Zandhoven was built in the 17th century, then under the name 'Het huis op 't Zant'. It was only given its current name at the beginning of the 19th century. The house has had different owners over the centuries. In 1954 it was bought by the municipality of Zwolle and today it is a nursing home. Not everyone is pleased with the construction of the sick wing in 1960 from an architectural point of view: the concrete 'box' is not entirely in line with the style of the beautiful old house.

Zandhove has traditionally been an estate, located south of Zwolle in the Ittersum neighborhood, on the main road to Deventer. Written history dates back to the seventeenth century. At that time it was a nail. In 1675 the nail was in a very poor condition. The name Zandhove was not yet used at the time. It was known as "Het Huis op 't Zant".
Cornelis Pronk drew the house in 1730 and even then gave it the name "'t Huis op 't Zandtbuiten Swol". It only appeared under the current name Zandhove at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
