The Dülken marketplace can be traced back to the Middle Ages in written evidence. In 1484 it was called "Up ten Marte", 1556 "aim Mardt", 1617 "Markt" and 1825 Marktplatz. The name Markt changed to Alter Markt around 1910 when the Neumarkt in the north was created.Since time immemorial, fairs have been held on St. Cornelius - on September 16 of each year - and on Ortisei - on July 4 of each year. They are already attested in 1398. There was also a Wednesday weekly market, which was converted into a "frymardt = free market" in 1470. This meant that traders from the surrounding villages first had to offer their goods in Dülken. Only then were they entitled to freely offer their goods everywhere.
