Inland Dunes of Besenhorster Sandberge

If you like, you can have a really good workout here in the loose, soft sand and test yourself and your bikeThe scenic area of the Besenhorster Sandberge on the edge of Geesthacht emerged from ice-age sand deposits that were blown into dunes. Even today the dunes are up to 20 meters high and overgrown with oak, pine and birch trees. In the immediate vicinity are the Elbe sand meadows, a dry sand lawn with rare plant species.
When biking you can also see the remains of the Düneberger powder factory, which was located there until the end of the Second World War. In the meantime nature has recaptured this area.
There is a signposted network of trails in the nature reserve. Circular hiking trails are available. It's also great for biking here. We recommend the parking lot at the Geesthacht exit (Am Schleusenkanal - behind the B404 bridge in the direction of Altengamme) or you start at Heuweg 65 in Geesthacht. Parking spaces are available on Heuweg. A small path (easy to miss) leads between two houses to an underpass on the other side of the B 404; from here the paths in the nature reserve are signposted.

Here you can see the large inland dunes. A little further there is a smaller dune, but you can only reach it all over the place.
