Plaça del Rei is one of the most emblematic places in the city of Barcelona, located in the Gothic Quarter. It preserves the rectangular layout derived from the urbanization project that was carried out during the reign of Martí l'Humà, in the second half of the fourteenth century. This project proposed to make an elongated square where tournaments could be held and thus eliminate the market that was traditionally held there. [1] The Plaza del Rey has been the historic seat of county and royal power in the city.

The west side is occupied by the Renaissance Palau del Lloctinent, from the 16th century.

At the south-eastern end of the square is the sculpture Topos V, by Eduardo Chillida. In this same space, there was for many years
