Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin was born on March 20, 1770 as the son of the monastery administrator in Lauffen am Neckar.
His father died when he was two years old. When his mother remarried in 1774, the family moved to Nürtingen.
Hölderlin is considered one of the most important poets in the German language. His work includes numerous poems, the novel "Hyperion", the tragedy "The Death of Empedocles", translations from Greek and Latin, philosophical and poetological drafts and letters.
His most important works were created between 1796 and 1806, and they continue to challenge interpretation to this day.
Friedrich Hölderlin died on June 7, 1843 in Tübingen.
