With the beginning of industrialization, hundreds of thousands of people migrated from the countryside to the city. Small farmers, agricultural workers and artisans who have been released are looking for a better future in the industrial centers. But for many, the new departure often only means new exploitation and misery: low wages with 12 to 14 hours a day, child labor, poverty and illness.
The result is dramatic change: urbanization, proletarianization, population explosion. In Berlin the population increases from 419,000 inhabitants (1850) to 2,071,000 (1910). Housing and living space are becoming scarce.
