A chapel was first mentioned in 1373. This chapel belonged to the church of Simpelveld. During excavations north of the present church, the foundations of a single-nave building with a narrower chancel ending on the right were discovered. Surrounding these foundations were further foundations of a larger building from the late Middle Ages.
The parish was established in 1794 and legalized in 1803.
The church was built between 1869 and 1873 according to a design by the architect Pierre Cuypers.
