Hiking Highlight
In the middle of the 20th century marble boulders were piled up in the combustion chamber. Each firing process required 900 degrees. The fire was never allowed to go out for three days and three nights, then the burned stones were thrown into wooden pits and water was poured over them. This is how sump lime was created - a valuable material for spreading on walls, disinfecting the stables, fertilizing in the garden and mixed with sand for the construction of stone masonry (information board on site)

The burning of lime used to be a rural sideline in which, in laborious work that also required a lot of experience and technical skill, marble stones were heated up to extract lime and then slowly cooled again. Source: passeier.it/suedtirol-passeiertal/wandern/von-breiteben-nach-christl.html
