Baume-les-Messieurs

Ancient and once important Benedictine monastery, whose origins date back to the Christianization of France in the 6th century. After 900, the still more famous abbey was founded in Cluny in Burgundy. Wonderful location in the basin framed by rock walls. Located on the GR 59.

Very well visited on WE or public holidays. Many parking along the one way street.

Very quaint old town in a beautiful rocky setting.
So much to see so the visit is worth making a detour here.

Baume-les-Messieurs is located in the circular basin Cirque de Baume, at an average altitude of 330m, surrounded by rock walls about 100 meters high. It covers an area of 1,309 hectares and is inhabited by just under 200 inhabitants. In the basin springs a spring stream of the Seille, a tributary of the Saône. It is classified as one of the "plus beaux villages de France" (most beautiful villages of France).
