Weißenstein Castle is the ruin of a hilltop castle in the Wehrda district of Marburg an der Lahn in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district in Hesse.Fast Facts

Findings from excavations show that the site was used in ancient times; possibly a part of the ramparts dates back to the Iron Age. The ramparts enclosed an area of 620 m². Relief data shows a surrounding wall, multi-stepped to the northwest, covering an area of approximately 1.4 ha.In the 8th and 9th centuries, actual castle construction began with a square building. By the 11th century, the complex had been expanded with ring walls, a residential tower, a triangular extension and a residential building with a pentagonal tower. The complex was destroyed by fire at the end of the 11th and beginning of the 12th century.
