The court was originally built in 1895 and stands on the site of the original Courthouse that was destroyed by fire in 1891. The building was rebuilt in 1895, following a competition by Cork Corporation. The competition stated that the portico and facade which remained in tact during the fire remained preserved in the new building.

A courthouse has stood here on Washington Street since 1836. The current building was built in 1895, to replace the original courthouse which was destroyed by fire. The portico and façade, which had escaped the fire, were preserved. In 2003, the courthouse underwent further redesign to expand its capacity.
