At 1,662 hectares, the Heidengraben is the largest Celtic oppidum in Germany and impresses with its well-preserved ramparts, which adapt to the shape of the plateau and were once fortified with elaborate pincer gates and a post-and-slot wall. Despite Roman finds in the region, there is no evidence of any direct encounter between Celts and Romans here.

With a total area of 1,662 hectares, the Heidengraben is not only the largest Celtic oppidum in Germany, but also one of the largest in Europe. The term "oppidum" for city-like, fortified large settlements of the late Celts of the second and first centuries BC in Central Europe was adopted based on Caesar's description of such complexes of the Celts in Gaul.
