The weir is part of what used to be a reservoir to divert water from the Guadalix River to Madrid back in the early 20th century. Today only ruins remain and it is one of the icons of the well-known Hervidero route.

The El Mesto weir is an old reservoir in the Guadalix riverbed, which was inaugurated in 1905 to bring water from the Guadalix river to the primitive canal to Madrid (Canal Bajo) through a simultaneously constructed canal (Canal del Guadalix).
