Marton Windmill has stood here since before 1799 and used to have four sails before it was taken apart in 1927. The Trent, the Thames and the Severn were the main river systems in 1760. Gainsborough grew to be an important port from the 16th century. Torksey at the time was no longer usable. However, the first port was in Marton exporting and trading local agriculture goods.Marton was home to a Roman fort and settlement.
