The Sherman tank adorns the Rupel as a "war memorial" at the wrought iron portal arch of the former Van Endschodt bridge. This tank stands here in memory of the successful crossing of three Sherman tanks on 4 September 1944. This important bridge was 'the keyhole' for the successful liberation of the city of Antwerp.

Historical location: On September 4, 1944, during World War II, the bridge was located here on the Allied route. The Allies had been tipped off by Engineer Lieutenant Robert Vekemans, allowing them to outmaneuver the Germans. This prevented the destruction of this bridge near Boom, and the city of Antwerp was liberated that same day.

The bridge was demolished in 1946, but a small section was preserved as a monument.

Later, a Sherman tank was placed next to the bridge in honor of the 11th Armored Division and Robert Vekemans.

This is the place where on 4 September 1944 the English liberators crossed the Rupel and were able to outwit the Germans. A Sherman tank now stands "as a war memorial" on the Rupelbord at the wrought iron portal arch of the former Van Endschodt bridge. This is in memory of the successful crossing of three Sherman tanks on 4 September 1944. This important bridge was 'the keyhole' for the successful liberation of the city of Antwerp.
