The castle - then located in the border area with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania - was built in 1433 for the Lithuanian nobleman Jonas Goštautas, the governor of Trakai and Vilnius, in place of the original wooden fortress. In the 1560s, after the death of the last member of the Goštautas family, the castle became the property of King Sigismund II Augustus, who expanded it[4]. Construction was directed by Job Bretfus, a military engineer and royal architect. During the reign of Sigismund Augustus, the building served as a royal residence with an impressive treasury and library, as well as the main arsenal of the crown. In the years 1611-1632 the castle was again rebuilt and surrounded with bastions by Krzysztof Wiesiołowski, the starosta of Tykocin (Translated from Wikipedia).

Polish kings willingly visited the Tykocin castle - Stefan Batory, Sigismund III Vasa, Władysław IV and August II the Strong. At the Tykocin Castle, August II awarded the Order of the White Eagle for the first time, which is still the oldest and highest Polish decoration.
