The Great Synagogue in Tykocin - a synagogue located in Kaczorów in Tykocin at 2 Kozia Street, in the vicinity of the Small Market Square. It is currently the second largest and one of the oldest synagogues in Poland and one of the best preserved 17th century synagogues in Europe.
The synagogue was built in 1642 on the site of an older wooden synagogue. In the 18th century, a low tower was added to the north-east corner, which originally served as a prison for Jews. In the 1840s, the synagogue underwent a thorough renovation. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was a great Jewish intellectual center. Many well-known, respected rabbis and Talmudists worked there[2][3].

During World War II, in 1941, the Nazis devastated and looted the interior of the synagogue and used it as warehouses. After the end of the war, the synagogue was still used as a storage facility by the city authorities, but this time for artificial fertilizers. In 1965, a fire broke out in the synagogue, which completed the destruction of the building, the unique library and archives of the Jewish community burned down, and the remaining miraculously saved books were thrown into the nearby river[

On the eastern wall there is a stone-carved, extremely richly decorated Mannerist Aron Kodesh with two columns and a large top with a Torah Crown in a round medallion, covered with a richly woven, new parochet. It was funded by the Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich and the Judaica Foundation[3].

In the past, the synagogue and nearby buildings of the Jewish community were surrounded by an arcaded wall with a gate, which was not rebuilt after the war. In front of the entrance to the synagogue, you can still see the foundations of destroyed stalls from the first half of the 18th century.

Synagogue in Tykocin – incredible rescue
The fact that the Synagogue in Tykocin survived World War II should be treated as a miracle. The almost complete annihilation of the Jewish community was inextricably linked to the destruction of the material and cultural heritage of many generations. Almost everything is gone. From tableware to houses, from Torah origins to the Yiddish language, from everyday customs to the craftsmanship of generations of Jewish craftsmen. There are towns in Podlasie where the only traces of Jews are forgotten, single tombstones scattered somewhere in the field. Everything is gone... but not in Tykocin. The uniqueness of this place is demonstrated by the full buses arriving at the synagogue parking lot. Thousands of young Israelis go on a trip to Poland every year... one of the places they visit is Tykocin. So if you are in Podlasie and your ambition is to see what is unique here, you must visit one of the best-preserved 17th-century synagogues in Europe. In the years 2016-2018, the building underwent a comprehensive renovation, and its equipment and collection of Judaica impress even outstanding experts on the subject.
