The 14th century mother church of Barcelos is dedicated to Santa Maria Maior. It still retains its powerful medieval appearance, complemented by various decorative and architectural elements that testify to the victory of the Gothic style over the Romanesque structure. Its construction was the result of an initiative by Dom Pedro, the 3rd Count of Barcelos, whose work is still indicated today by the coat of arms on the archivolt of the main portal.
