The people of Salzbergen affectionately call their Hengemühlensee the “Blue Lagoon”. Indeed, the lake's fine sandy beach bears a resemblance to the romantic tropical beach in the classic film of the same name. In the north the residential development extends to the water, on the other sides the bank is natural. The adjacent nature reserve Emstal can be explored on bike and hiking trails.
